Undertow - Photography Series (2019)

An excerpt from a collection shot on Seaview beach in Karachi. While exclusionary corporate and state forces prowl the coastline, this beach remains a rare public space in the city open to people from all walks of life. And though the tide becomes more aggressive and unpredictable with each passing year, an increasing number of visitors and vendors find themselves drawn to Seaview’s bustling shores, wading deeper and farther into its troubled waters. Patterns emerge as you slide amongst them; of people moving in and out of small formations, the tug of community versus the undertow of separation. The following photographs try to give expression to these moments of interaction, tension and escape.

All photographs made using Kodak Tri-X film.
